Nonprofit Volunteer Training

This is a training concept designed and developed to help a local nonprofit organization train their prospective volunteers without the need of in-person instruction. Throughout the course, one of the organization’s training specialists would guide participants through the virtual training and hold discussions via Zoom.

The Problem

In the case of BBBS, pre-match volunteer training is essential to meet the organization’s national standards. Engaging volunteers and ensuring adequate absorption of pivotal information about child safety practices, the BBBS process, mentoring guidelines, and tips for being a positive role model is a top priority.

Trainings are typically held in-person at the BBBS office in the conference room. Volunteers follow along as the trainer moves through PowerPoint slides about the organization, what it means to mentor, child safety, how to stay engaged in the mentoring relationship, etc. They offer a couple scenario-based questions for mentors to volunteer answers to.

I found myself compelled to draft a web-based volunteer training program demo that could be adapted by nonprofit organizations that were looking for ways to train prospective volunteers without the need of in-person instruction.

The Plan

My plan was to take the training from the office to a virtual platform where volunteers and trainers can safely engage with one-another during COVID from the comfort of their own home, while remaining interested and active as they acquire imperative knowledge about being involved in the organization. The revamped trainings would take place in a hybrid environment where instruction would be guide by a training specialist on Zoom as volunteers worked through modules created in Articulate Storyline.
